Summer School Programs

Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute has offered the International Summer School Program since 2000. This educational program of workshops, research and travel to major cultural sites of China has been accepted for college-level credit from various North American educational institutions. Students have participated in the program either individually or as a formal university group. Artists who are seeking a learning environment are also most welcome to join in the summer school program.

The summer school students will travel to major cultural sites of China is well organized with bilingual guides and knowledgeable staff. The tour travels in private air-conditioned buses, first-class on trains and with major Chinese airlines. Major sites are either Beijing - Xian or Shanghai - Yixing and then on to Yunnan Province in the southwest of China.

University Students Studying with SUNY Cortland cost: TBA

Non-Student cost is $2800US
The scholarships from Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute are to defray the costs of workshops and museums. Artist must apply for this scholarship.

Deposits

A $200US deposit is to be paid in advance, with application. The deposit will be returned, minus $50US administration fee, if application is not successful.

19 Days May 24 – June 14, 2010

Objectives of this program are to provide you with historical, economic, social, and cultural perspectives of China not often visited. This program is designed to appeal to students of all majors. Upon admission to the program, you will be expected to work closely with the program's director to design your own research project, which builds upon on your own unique major and interests. With this project in mind, you will spend your time in China conducting research and traveling to historical cultural sites

Sample Itinerary

Enter China at the port city of Shanghai.
Visit the historic Bund section.
Visit ancient villages in the ethnically and geographically diverse Jiangxi, Anhui and Zhejiang Provinces.
Visit the markets with traditional practices.
Shop for antiques, ceramics, textiles, wood, jewelry and other village crafts. Have a 7-day residency in Jingdezhen learning a variety of Chinese arts and experiencing local culture.
Meet the porcelain masters and see some of the thousands of factory studios.

Activity
Day 1
Arrive in Shanghai. Visit local areas in evening. Acclimate to time difference and culture.
Day 2
Visit Shanghai Museum. Tour Yu Yuan Garden Area of old Shanghai.
Day 3
Private bus to ancient city of Longquan. Longquan is located in the southwest of Zhejiang Province, with beautiful landscape and cultural history. Longquan Celadon was produced starting in the Three Kingdoms period (about 220-265 AD), developed during the Northern Song Dynasty, and blossomed in the Southern Song Dynasty. Stay in old part of town.
Day 4
Visit Da-Yao old village, which still keeps many old celadon kiln sites from Song Dynasty, visit celadon master’s studios and sword-making workshop.
Day 5
Cultural exchange with students from nearby university. Visit local historical sites.
Day 6 - 13

Bus to Jingdezhen, visit an old dragon kiln on the way and arrive at Jingdezhen Sanbao.

Residency Programs in Jingdezhen Sanbao (days 7-13) Majors from other disciplines may elect to develop a personalized program with the director during this residency at Jingdezhen

The Sanbao Institute is located in Sanbao village, a suburb of Jingdezhen city.

Sanbao is the ceramic educational base of the China International Summer School. Surrounded by beautiful mountains and rivers, the facilities were re-built in the traditional style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (many original structures) with a wood-fired kiln. It is regarded as the best place to experience the Jingdezhen traditional culture.

We will spend one day visiting Tianbao folk pottery (150 foot-long dragon kiln) and Yaoli ancient village. Youli is located to the northeast about 61 kilometers from Jingdezhen. Nestled in the beautiful mountain area, the village has many Qing Dynasty architectural examples. Exchange with Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute students in the evenings.
Day 14
Bus trip to Jin County, village of Taoyao, a traditional pottery village that makes human size pots and supports a dragon kiln.
Day 15
Visit an old traditional rice paper making village and then travel to Huangshan (Yellow Mountains). Stay in Taiping city overnight. Located in the south of Anhui Province. Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) has 72 peaks, 24 streams, three waterfalls and two lakes Lotus Peak, Mount Huangshan's highest, is 1,864m above sea level. The four wonders of Mount Huangshan are strangely shaped pines, grotesque rocks, cloud seas, and hot springs. The beauty of Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) was a favorite destination to find inspiration for Buddhist monks, painters and poets since the Tang dynasty(618-907ad).
Day 16
Take the cable car to the top of Huangshan Mountain, and hike down in the same day.  Stay in Taiping over night. Explore the tea markets in the evening.
Day 17
Bus to Shanghai, rest in Shanghai hotel.
Day 18
Free day in Shanghai. Preparation for flight home.  Farewell banquet.
Day 19
International Flight to USA from Pudong Airport.
